Quotable Quote XXI

"People can no longer be easily controlled. The communications industry, the world of cyberspace, universities, the work place, the world of sports and entertainment are generally beyond the control of religious authority."

Archbishop Edward Gilbert

Happy Blasphemy Day!

Yes. Today is Blasphemy Day International.

What does that mean? First of all it’s not about pissing off believers just for the sake of it. It’s more about reminding us that nothing is out of the limits of criticism. If that were the case, we would easily have “crime thoughts” by doubting what others cling to.

How is this idea born? A day like today in 2005 a Danish newspaper published a cartoon of Mohammed that angered muslims around the world. The disgust might be understood since for Muslims depicting the prophet is a big offense. The problem is when they try to make that concept applicable to others. And it gets worse when that disgust comes with destruction. Certainly, rational adults don’t destroy things when they get angry.

But this idea is not only to focus on cartoons and the right newspapers have to publish them. The idea is to spread the idea that everything can be questioned with a good argument. Politicians are questioned, directors are criticized and policies get discussed. So must be religious beliefs that affect others. The idea behind the cartoon was to depict the relationship between Islamic beliefs and violence, which was proven by the behavior of Mohammed’s followers. Christianity also has its own share of intolerance, as in the case of Ireland passing laws against blasphemy, which might result as a threat to everyone who dares making fun or even questioning such beliefs. Even comedy might be banned under those laws, for it would empower believers to feel “offended” at anything they don’t like.

So, for the sake of the freedom to question and laugh at nonsensical beliefs, I present you with a couple of videos that, while funny, make a very interesting point.

Steve Carrel and Stephen Colbert present us why nonbelievers often laugh at believers who think they are right and everybody else who beliefs something different is not. We are not talking about a scientific theory, or a particular taste. It's just "my imaginary friend is better than your imaginary friend."

But if we talk about "major league" disrespect and blasphemy...

If there is a god, he/she must be laughing his ass off with this guy sitting at his right, showing him/her what his/her followers did down here.

And finally, a random cartoon from Jesus and Mo.

Follow your common sense
You cannot hide yourself
behind a fairytale forever and ever
Only by revealing the whole truth can we disclose
The soul of this bulwark forever and ever
Forever and ever
Sigue tu sentido común
No puedes esconderte

Indoctrinated minds so very often
Contain sick thoughts
And commit most of the evil they preach against

Mentes adoctrinadas que frecuentemente
contienen pensamientos enfermos

Don't try to convince me with messages from God
You accuse us of sins committed by yourselves
It's easy to condemn without looking in the mirror
Behind the scenes opens reality

Eternal silence cries out for justice
Forgiveness is not for sale
Nor is the will to forget

Virginity has been stolen at very young ages
And the extinguisher loses it's immunity
Morbid abuse of power in the garden of eden
Where the apple gets a youthful face

You can't go on hiding yourself
Behind old fashioned fairytales
And keep washing your hands in innocence

No puedes irte escondiendo

Cry For The Moon, cry for humanity

A couple of days ago, one of my favorite bands, Epica, released a new song, Unleashed. The song is awesome, strong, intense, as most of this band’s songs. And above all of that intensity, Simone Simons’ mezzo-soprano voice.

What does that has to do here? The first song I heard from Epica was the kind of song that talks directly to you, in both, music and lyrics. Moreover, I heard this song in which my ideas against religion’s abuses and nonsense were getting stronger. I wrote about it in my other blog commenting about the lyrics, and because of the release of the new song, I’ll post it here too.

Follow your common sense
You cannot hide yourself
behind a fairytale forever and ever
Only by revealing the whole truth can we disclose
The soul of this bulwark forever and ever
Forever and ever

During the last months, in which I’ve been looking up to news about what goes on around the world, it’s just outrageous to witness how much abuse is committed in the name of religion. These atrocities are committed by people who justify their action with a fairy tale that has no intention to change despite all the proof that anyone can present to it.

Indoctrinated minds so very often
Contain sick thoughts
And commit most of the evil they preach against

While pastors throw their hate and intolerance-filled words from their pulpits, it’s the believers who, like mere sheep, follow the commandments of those who say represent god on Earth. The preach for love and understanding among men, but usually they are the first ones to spread intolerance and division among others.

Don't try to convince me with messages from God
You accuse us of sins committed by yourselves
It's easy to condemn without looking in the mirror
Behind the scenes opens reality

We non-believers are usually accused of having an empty life, of not having values, of not noticing what they call “facts” to justify their actions by believers. They pretend that we acknowledge their so-called “love messages” from God. But at the same time, those who accuse us think they are infallible by believing they know god’s message, message in which it is not allowed to think further than what is already known.

Eternal silence cries out for justice
Forgiveness is not for sale
Nor is the will to forget

How many have been excluded or insulted because of these myths? How many have suffered because of being different? How many of those who committed these abuses keep preaching in the name of god as if nothing had happened, trying to forget all the evil they had done?

Virginity has been stolen at very young ages
And the extinguisher loses it's immunity
Morbid abuse of power in the garden of eden
Where the apple gets a youthful face

The young are especially vulnerable to the religious brainwash. From an early age kids are taught how especial they are and all the rewards they will get if the submit and obey everything they pastors tell them, even if it involves separation and discrimination. Religions are usually obsessed with sexuality, which is demonized and charged with guilt, even though is as natural as it can be.

You can't go on hiding yourself
Behind old fashioned fairytales
And keep washing your hands in innocence

Many believers just refuse to think and open their eyes to science and the real knowledge it brings. On the contrary, they choose to keep believing the same old stories and, which is worse, keep committing abuses in the name of god, just to wash their hands claiming that is the way they will get to heaven, while making a hell on Earth.

Both the lyrics and music are incredible. In a time like this, in which religion commits one atrocity after another, using its power and influence it’s hard not to be outraged. Yet, it’s comforting to find artistic expressions, like this song, that provides strength and hope to those of us who stand up for a better future without religious hypocrisy.

Quotable Quote XIX

"Religions are founded on the fear of the many and the cleverness of the few."

Stendhal.

Kill your family, believe in Jesus, go to heaven

Sounds nice, huh? Well, that’s what this guy seems to think.

Mesac Damas, 32, said he wanted to take his own life, but did not have the courage to go through with it, "because if you kill yourself, you're not going to heaven."

It’s clear this guy is not sane, so it would be unfair to say something like ”this is an example of what believers are, etc, etc…” But I’m going to comment on the last line.

So this guy thinks he is going to go to Heaven after having killed his wife and children. “His eyes are opened”, he now believes in Jesus and because of that, he is going to Heaven.

No wonder where he got that idea. I remember some Christian friends, during a conversation about believing in Jesus, stressed the importance of believing in God. They also made clear that being good, or following his commandments regarding others was not enough to go to heaven, since he had said that we had to believe in him.

If that is right, that would mean that god, their god, is a jealous god. And jealousy is a very human defect, so to me it would not make sense to believe in a god, all powerful, all knowing, that feels just like an imperfect human. As an agnostic, I do not know if there is a god, but if there is, I don’t want to think it is an overpowered redneck willing to punish us if we do not love him. Rather, if there is a god, I think it is intelligent enough to consider that even though I (and many others) do not believe in it, think that the idea of love among men is a good idea.

If that is not the case and I am wrong, and there is really a jealous god who calls to heaven only those who believe in him (including that murderer from above) I will certainly enjoy hell.

Rapture day FAIL

According to some fundies the Rapture is taking place today:

WARNING: Will The Rapture take place on Monday-September 21st 2009, at The Last Trump of Rosh Hashanah?

We are commanded to know the signs of the times and to be prepared to meet The Lord in the air at the catching away of the believers. The Bible teaches that the church (Jesus’ bride) will not be here during the 7-year period known as The Tribulation.

Astronomical signs prove 100% that the ending of the

7-year tribulation period is at the end of 2015!

Therefore, the beginning of the 7-year

Tribulation period starts by FALL 2009!

How do they know? They have PROOF!

Like most modern day prophecies, this one fails miserably. It’s 3:45 in California, most eastern countries are already in September 22nd. There was no rapture there, so the possibility that there is a rapture here is very, very small. Not only for today, but for future days, since this event has been predicted lots of times in the past.

I’ll be sincere, I didn’t read the whole page (it’s huge and I have better things to do), but there is no doubt it’s pure nonsense. If this is the kind of intelligence created by an almighty being, I am not amused.

See you tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow, until the day we die or nuke the hell out of us. But because of the rapture.

(Ex) Padre Martin is kind of a cool guy. And Cipriani is still a douchebag

I don’t usually have a very good image of priests. Most of those I’ve known are proud and self-righteous, ready to judge you and teach you “what is good”, as told by Vatican.

However, there are priests and priests, and a priest who is able to break his vow of obedience in order to do something actually good is someone to admire.

That priest is the Padre Martin. Sorry, Ex Padre Martin.

Padre Martin, o Martin Sanchez Terán used to be a priest who worked trying to improve the life conditions of poor children, something Perú really needs. He had a bakery in which he employed poor children and youngsters. He started building a name and gaining reputation.

Then came the scandal:

Father Martin Sanchez, director of the organization "El Hogar de Cristo" was detained during the night along with 3 other people in the Costa Verde shore.

[...]

The policemen who stopped him said they found him drunk and in a romantic attitude with his personal assistant, who was sitting in his legs.

Being a priest, that was very hypocritical. Being himself gay, he belonged to an institution that discriminates and demonizes gay people. At least he did not do it with children, but with adults.

Then came the suspension. Cardinal Cipriani (the Peruvian Bill Donohue, a total catholic douchebag) suspended him. I don’t know to what extent he did it, but apparently, the Padre Martin cannot call himself “padre” since he is not a priest anymore.

According to Martin:

“I broke Cipriani’s schemes. As a priest I used to do aerobics, I danced Marinera (one of Peru’s most awesomest dances), drank pisco sour and promoted ethnic parties at a restaurant. This kind of stuff upsets a conservative”

After Cipriani suspended him, his work, the “Hogar de Cristo” (Christ’s Home) stopped receiving 70% of the donations it used to have. Martin studied business and kept working in it.

There was also an accusation for child pornography, which ended up being false and product of some people trying to destroy Martin’s good name. There is no information about who was behind that.

Also, Martin is a very liberal and inteligent person:
Martin supports the ending of celibacy and also supports gay marriage, which are ideas he wouldn’t be able to say while being a priest. He considers that “a sexual option is as valid as any other”, but in his case, he is very clear: he doesn’t deny having a relationship with a woman (he had a girlfriend before being a priest). “I treasure the image of being incredibly happy with whatever God puts in front of me. By now, my priority is to be a successful businessman” he says.

As I said before, it was hypocritical of him to be a priest while also gay. He was suspended from the church, which is an understandable punishment. But here is where the catholic church shows its true colors: after he was suspended, his foundation received much less donation, which affected the poor children. The catholic church cares more about its own pride than the lives of those in need, who are supposedly those who Jesus would have cared the most. It’s the same old catholic hypocrisy.

Martin keeps working for the poor children, even after being shunned by those who were supposed to help him to help those children. Now free from that despicable institution, he is able to say what he thinks is right without having to obey nonsensical and hateful positions. Martin committed some errors, but now works for those in need and is able to think freely.

That’s what makes him cool. If more people were like him, the world would be different.

Arr!

Arr! Today was Talk Like a Pirate Day!

And I have no idea of how to talk like a pirate. It’s not really easy for me to talk even in old Spanish, so “pirate” English is much harder. Yet, to wander around looking for pirate stuff on the web was great. I found music, a Facebook application and the truth about pirates

First of all, I found an awesome band, Alestorm. Pirate-themed power metal has been playing in my computer during most of the time I’ve been sitting in front of it. Maybe not as epic as Stratovarious or Rhapsody of Fire, but still awesome. My favorite songs:

And yes, I got the songs in the same way a pirate would have done it. And I’ll be doing whatever needs to go to their concert on November in San Marcos.

Second, I found an option on Facebook to make “Pirate” English my language. It’s not very easy to understand but is funny as hell. Go to the lower part, click on “English” (or whatever language you use) and choose the “Pirate” English.

And third but not least, I found the truth about the Pirates. They are not the vile creatures that have been described to us, but actually the real and true followers of God, The Flying Spaghetti Monster. After they started disappearing from the seas, everything got worse, especially the global temperature, which has been rising.

That’s the truth taught by Pastafarianism. Is it pure nonsense? Maybe, just like any other set of belief. Just that this one is less hateful and bigoted than mainstream religions, like Christianity, Islam or Judaism.

If I ever were to believe in something , I might choose this belief I might even go out and spread His word:

Maybe, someday I'll be touched by His noodly appendage.

Church ordains sex offender. No, it's not a joke

They are right when they say that reality surpasses fiction.

The ordination of Mark Hourigan is scheduled to take place at the City of Refuge Worship Center in Germantown on Sunday morning.

Hourigan was charged with sexually abusing and sodomizing an 11-year-old boy in 1998.

This is not even a catholic church, are they trying to see if having a sex offender in their ranks will make them as successful as the catholics? Ok, god loves, god forgives, whatever, but to put a sex offender to lead service is too much. We're not talking just about someone who flashed a kid, this is someone who sodomized an 11 year-old boy.

I have no words for this. Just a big WTF!

Another family values champion goes down the tube

Down went Mark Foley.

Down went Mark Sanford.

Down went Ted Haggard.

Down went these proud and pompous guys who loved to brag about family values and moral superiority.

Now another “family values champion” joins their shame and hypocrisy:

In July--two days after Assembly Speaker Karen Bass and Republican leader Sam Blakeslee put Michael Duvall on the Rules Committee that oversees member ethics--the second-term, conservative, Republican assemblyman sat in a public hearing and vividly described lewd details about his trysts with a female lobbyist whose clients had business before another committee on which
 Duvall sits.

[…]

"She wears little eye-patch underwear," said Duvall, who is married with two children. "So, the other day she came here with her underwear, Thursday. And
so, we had made love Wednesday--a lot! And so she'll, she's all, 'I am going
up and down the stairs, and you're dripping out of me!' So messy!"

And, yes, there is a video:

I don’t see any problem with eye-patch underwear, spanking or messy businesses. But I do see the problem when these actions are done with a woman who is not your wife and mother of your children. And I see an even bigger problem when they are done by a man who takes pride in his family values, brags about them and tries to intervene in others’ private life.

That has one name: Hypocrisy

What happened to the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye?

Quotable Quote XVII

"Wherever we look, people claiming to have the 'Word of God' keep presenting words that reflect their own cultural, political, and social prejudices. A different 'Word of God' for every cultural, political, and social context. What are the chances that this isn't just lots of different people who have beliefs that they can't or won't be able to support, but hope to give exaggerated authority to by attributing it all to a deity who isn't around to confirm or deny the allegations?"

Austin Cline

Hijacking a plane with His help

Today the world remembers the hijacking of the planes that ultimately hit and destroyed the WTC. More than 3000 people died because of the holy mission the hijackers had in order to please their god.

Well, almost 8 years after, another hijacker who counted with god’s help hijacked a plane. The difference is while the 9/11 incident was tragic, this year’s hijacking is just ridiculous.

Josmar Flores Pereira, told authorities he hijacked the Boeing 737 jet because the date -- September 9, 2009, or 9/9/9, and 666 reversed -- held some significance for him, said Genaro Garcia Luna, the secretary for public safety.

"He said that because of that divine reference, he wanted to alert Mexico City of an earthquake," Garcia told reporters.

Basically, this guy wanted to alert Calderon (Mexico’s president) that a huge earthquake was coming. To do so he told the flight assistant he had a bomb, which actually was a cardboard box. Few of the passengers were aware of this. No guns, no knives, no yelling, only a cardboard box.

But the best part is this: When a flight attendant asked him if he was alone, he said he had three partners: “The father, the son and the holy spirit”.

Is this guy crazy or not? I’m tempted to say yes. But, wait, he was acting because god told him to do it, just like many other believers. Maybe not in the same extreme way as to hijack a plane, but is still their acts are going to be “guided by god.”

Want an example? Iraq.

According to Bush and Palin, the US intervention in Iraq was commanded by god. And these are known and respected people, there are many others, less known, who attribute their actions to something they think god wants them to do. I’ve been told many times by believers to “listen to the voice of god, but to listen with an open heart.” I wonder if they do the same and if what they hear (or think they hear) is taken with as much seriousness as Josmar took what god told him to do.

The Muslim hijackers did so too.

I, along with John Lennon, like to imagine

Godless America, on the rise

According to CNN:
America is a less Christian nation than it was 20 years ago, and Christianity is not losing out to other religions, but primarily to a rejection of religion altogether, a survey published Monday found.

Seventy-five percent of Americans call themselves Christian, according to the American Religious Identification Survey from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1990, the figure was 86 percent.
It’s so nice to find good news in these times, specially when the religious think they still have the right to stomp on others’ rights and shove their beliefs on our faces by disregarding knowledge, science and basic human rights.

Naturally, American christians are far from happy about this.

William Donohue, president of the Catholic League said he thinks a radical shift towards individualism over the last quarter-century has a lot to do it.

What’s wrong with individualism? Isn’t it, the power of the people, for the people and by the people what America was founded on? Besides, I bet that if a liberal said something like that the right would be very quick in labeling that person as a socialist. Again, hypocrisy ad maximum, coming not just from the religious, but from the religious right.

"The three most dreaded words are thou shalt not," he told Lou Dobbs. "Notice they are not atheists -- they are saying I don't want to be told what to do with my life."

Isn’t that what most conservatives dislike? A government that tells the people what to do? That is wrong, but if it’s a magic sky man, then it’s ok.

Yet, not everything is good news.

The survey also found that "born-again" or "evangelical" Christianity is on the rise, while the percentage who belong to "mainline" congregations such as the Episcopal or Lutheran churches has fallen.

I don’t usually hear much about episcopalians or lutherans doing much fuss about issues, but evangelicals sure do.

The rise in evangelical Christianity is contributing to the rejection of religion altogether by some Americans, said Mark Silk of Trinity College.

"In the 1990s, it really sunk in on the American public generally that there was a long-lasting 'religious right' connected to a political party, and that turned a lot of people the other way," he said of the link between the Republican Party and groups such as the Moral Majority and Focus on the Family.

It’s really nice to see that people notice how despicable these self-righteous organizations are, and thus try to be away from them. Which is also applicable to the catholic church.

Silk also said the revelation that some Catholic priests had sexually abused children -- and senior figures in the church hierarchy had helped to hide it -- drove some Catholics away from religion.

What else can a rational person do? You see your spiritual guides are raping children and their superiors are doing nothing about it, but don’t miss the opportunity to preach about the love of god, sex is bad, homosexuality is a sin and other nonsense, what do you do? Can you really bear all that and still call yourself a catholic?

Finally, those who leave their religions don’t call themselves “atheists” or anything like that. They just say they have no religion. I hope they will eventually embrace atheism, or other expression of a rejection of faith, as a perfect way of life, based on reason and knowledge instead of blind faith. Change is gradual, but it has been happening for quite a time now. There is hope.

Stairway to deception

Some days ago I received an email with a power point presentation about the “miraculous” staircase of a church in New Mexico. The text that comes in the presentation can be read in Snopes.com, actually the best place to debunk nonsense that predates our inbox. And, yes, the “miracle” this Power Point presentation talks about is (as usual) no miracle.

The text in the presentation talks about how the nuns needed a staircase, they prayed, a man came, built the staircase, disappeared.

Then it says that the staircase has no central support, which has amused “architects, engineers and scientists”. Well, that's not so: “the staircase does have a central support [...] the two wood stringers (or spiral structural members) the inner one is of such small radius that it functions as an almost solid pole.” Besides, the text mentions that the staircase had no nails. But that is only natural, since in the time it was built nails were not often used and carpenters had ways to build without them.

There goes a mystery down the tube.

The third mystery is about the wood, which is said that no one knows where it comes from. That's not totally true, since the piece given to be analyzed was smaller than the usual. The wood has been identified as spruce, which has 10 species in the US. The fact the the exact kind of wood from where it comes from has not yet been recognized does not mean that it's a mystery. If there had been a more adequate sample there would be a better chance to find what kind of wood that it. Of course, that would help debunk the miracle.

There goes down another mystery.

The only mystery remaining is the man who built the staircase. After he finished, he was nowhere to be found. But this does not mean, as the text says, that he was Saint Joseph, Jesus's father.

More information on Committee for Skeptical Inquiry.

It is so easy to find evidence that proof that this, once “unexplainable” events, are just as subject to physics laws as is anything in the world. Yet, the people who forward these emails (Christians, who else?) do not hesitate in believing any kind of nonsense if it is attributed to God. If it's for God, their capacity to question goes almost null, while ignorance and belief by “faith” take a privileged place over reason.

But that's not news. Religions have fed on ignorance to survive through the times. This story, spread via email is no more than spreading lies, in the name of god.

Where is the 8th commandment again?

Quotable Quote XVI

Religion has actually convinced people that there's an INVISIBLE MAN...LIVING IN THE SKY...who watches every thing you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten special things that he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish where he will send to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry for ever and ever 'til the end of time...but he loves you.

Y veré a Bill Maher.

I’m going to the Atheist Alliance International Convention!

And I’m going to get Richard Dawkins to sign my copy of The God Delusion. No. Matter. What.

Also, listen to PZ Myers.

And get a glimpse of Bill Maher.

Quotable Quote XV

"To describe Richard Dawkins' writings as intolerant misses the point. The problem Dawkins presents for believers is that his arguments and evidence reduce religious belief to the superstition, ritual and tribalism that it really is. He does so with such devastating efficiency that believers are left looking a bit stupid. That's merely stating his case well, not intolerance."

Padre:
“Pensé que eras más inteligente, realmente me has decepcionado”

Esta es clásica, el chantaje emocional. “Hiciste algo que no me gusta, ergo, no eres inteligente y me has decepcionado.”

Padre:
¡Voy a ir hacia allá y voy a sacar la mierda!

Novio:

Jewish parents get pranked

One of the reasons that make leaving the religion we were brought up with so hard is our parents’ reaction. Not every parent accepts the idea that their kids do not believe what they were educated. Many parents take this as a failure in their parenting skills, especially the very religious ones.

Another thing parents don’t seem to take very well is when their children start dating. The words “that person is not good for you” will eventually find their way from our parents’ mouth.

But what happens when that person “who is not good enough” is so because he or she is of a different religion?

That is what this Jewish girl discovered after making a prank call to her parents.

Blank

These are just some of the phrases that this very religious jewish parents yell at his supposedly daughter’s boyfriend:

Mom:
“He’s Italian, for God’s sake, what’s the matter with you? […] he could be a murderer, he could be anything”
How would it sound "He's black, for god's sake!" or "He's Hispanic, for god's sake. He could be a murderer." The xenophobia is so blatant that, more than funny, it's outrageous. Makes you hope something bad happens to that woman.

Dad:
“I thought you smarter than that, you really disappointed me”

This is classic: the emotional blackmail. "You did something I don't like, then you are not smart and I'm dissapointed." Doesn't this guy notice that by doing so he's basically saying "I have no arguments to defend my bigoted position, so I'll make as if I'm sad. Go ahead and stop believing me."

Dad:

“You motherfucker! I don’t like you, I don’t like anything about you, and if I see you, I’m gonna fucking break you in a million pieces”

Dad:
“I’m gonna come over there and beat the fucking living shit out of you”

Boyfriend:
Well, that wouldn’t be very religious now, would it?

I just loved this part. The old man rants, insults and yells at the guy who points out the elephant-size hypocrisy this man shows. He calls himself religious, yet is full of hatred nad prejudice. Unless judaism is a religion that promotes hatred (which wouldn't surprise me) this guy is the perfect example of a hypocrite.

I have to admit I laugh every time I listen to it. At the same time, it amuses me how the father gets so angry with her daughter just for dating a guy of another nationality. I don’t know if Jews have something against Italians. Even though the false boyfriend gets irreverent with the man, it’s pretty obvious that father has something against him without knowing more than his nationality and his religion.

The girl laughs, but it must suck to have parents like those, so prejudiced and hateful. I feel sorry for her.
