Ampay a Santa Rosa!

Hoy, 30 de Agosto, se celebra en el Perú (y en varios otros países) la fiesta de Santa Rosa de Lima. Recuerdo que hace 10 años estaba en el santuario de Santa Rosa, junto con todo mi colegio, para atender a la misa en su honor. Lo que no recuerdo es que si estaba a gusto de estar allí, o si al igual que la mayoría de mis compañeros, esperaba que la misa se acabara rápido.

Ese es uno de los recuerdos que tengo sobre Santa Rosa., el ir al santuario de esta cada año. Otro recuerdo es el de una monja vieja cantando una canción en su honor con voz chillona cuando estaba en primaria.

Como verán, desde niños se nos enseña a reverenciar a los santos. No es de sorprender el que algunos adultos sigan adorando estas figuras. Y creo que parte de esa fascinación que teníamos con los santos, al menos de niños, son los milagros que supuestamente hicieron.

Uno de los milagros que se le atribuyen a Santa Rosa es el orar para que le corsario holandés George Spilbergen no atacase Lima. Bueno, gracias a El Utero de Marita y Amautacuna de la Historia, ese “milagro” ha sido aclarado.

Cuando el corsario Spilbergen, que profesaba el calvinismo, llegó al Callao en todo Lima se esparció el rumor de que sus hombre entrarían al Convento de Santo Domingo para profanar el Sacramento del Altar. Al oírlo la santa limeña corrió hasta el templo y "subió al altar para escudar la eucaristia con su propio cuerpo", dispuesta a morir en su defensa. Al mismo tiempo le suplicó a la Virgen del Rosario que protegiera la ciudad.

Siendo un corsario, estoy seguro que Silpbergen tenía mejores cosas que hacer que ir a meterse a una iglesia a a profanar lo que sea que haya allí. Tal vez sus hombres habrían querido pasar un buen rato con la muchacha de 29 años que quería dar su vida, pero no me consta. Después de todo, no eran piratas propiamente dichos.

Curiosamente, Spilbergen no desembarcó en el Callao ni atacó Lima; enrumbó a Paita y Acapulco, luego a las Molucas para nunca regresar. Los limeños le atribuyeron su salvación a Santa Rosa de Lima, y hasta hoy muchos recuerdan el episodio como uno de sus principales milagros.

Sin embargo, revisando algunos libros encontré algunos datos que nos permiten entender mejor el por qué se salvó Lima aquel martes 21 de julio de 1615:

- En el Combate de Cerro Azul Spilbergen perdió un barco y las otras cinco quedaron muy maltrechas.

- En el mismo combate, el corsario holandés perdió a la cuarta parte de sus hombres.

- Cuando Spilbergen llegó al Callao y ordenó el desembarco sus lanchas fueron bombardeadas por un cañón que protegía el puerto.

- Spilbergen solo contaba con 300 hombres, y no se sintió suficientemente fuerte para continuar el ataque.

EN OTRAS PALABRAS, Lima NO FUE SALVADA debido a las oraciones de Santa Rosa (como si las oraciones alguna vez diesen resultado), sino debido a una serie de razones en particular.

En cierta forma es comprensible que la gente ore cuando no tiene ninguna otra opción y toda oportunidad está perdida. Pero esas oraciones no cambiarán nada. Tus seres queridos podrán estarse muriendo y puedes juntar a todo el pueblo para orar, pero eso tampoco va a funcionar. Lo siento, así es la milanesa. Santa Rosa puede haber orado todo lo que le haya dado la gana, pero no merece ningún crédito por la salvación de Lima.

Santa Rosa de Lima, myth busted!

Today, august 30, Peru (and surely many other countries) celebrate the festivity of Santa Rosa de Lima. I remember 10 years ago I was at the sanctuary of Santa Rosa, along with my whole school, to attend a mass in her honor. I don’t remember if I was ok with that or hoped (as most of my classmates) the celebration finished quickly.

That’s one of the memories I have about Santa Rosa, going every year to the sanctuary. Another is an old nun singing a song in her honor in a squeaky voice when I was in elementary school.

As you can notice, children are taught to revere these saint figures since they are very young. No wonder some adults keep revering those figures. I think part of the fascination one feels about it are the miracles that those saints supposedly did.

One of the miracles Santa Rosa is credited for is praying for the corsair Jorge Spilbergen not to attack Lima. Well, thanks to El Utero de Marita and Amautacuna de la Historia, that miracle has been busted.

When the corsair Spilbergen, a Calvinist, arrived to Callao (the principal port in Peru, very near Lima, the capital) everywhere in Lima was the rumor that his men would enter the Santo Domingo Convent to desecrate the Sacrament in the Altar. When Santa Rosa heard that, she run to the temple and “climbed up the altar to protect the eucharist with her own body”, eager to die defending it. At the same time she prayed to the Virgen del Rosario to protect the city

Being a corsair, I’m sure Spilbergen had better things to do than going to a church and desecrate whatever was there. His men might have had a good time with 29 year-old Rosa, but that’s just my speculation. After all, they weren’t pirates.

Coincidently, Spilbergen did not disembarked in Callao, neither attacked Lima; he went to Paita and Acapulco and then to Molucas and never came back. The people from Lima attributed their salvation to Santa Rosa de Lima and to this day many remember the episode as one of her principal miracles.

However, checking some books, I found some facts that allow us to understand better why Lima was not attacked that Tuesday, July 21, 1615:

- In the Cerro Azul combat, Spilbergen lost a ship and other 5 were left very damaged
- In that same combat, the corsair lost 25% of his men.
- When Spilbergen arrived to Callao and commanded the disembarkment, his ships were attacked by a canon that protected the port.
- Spilbergen only had 300 men and did not

IN OTHER WORDS, Lima was NOT SAVED because Santa Rosa’s prayers (as if prayer ever worked), but because a particular reason.

On a certain way is understandable that people pray when they have no other options and all hope is lost. But those prayers won’t change anything. Your beloved ones may be dying and you can gather the entire town to pray, but that won’t work. Sorry, that’s how it is. Santa Rosa may have prayed all she wanted, but she doesn’t deserve any credit for Lima no being invaded.

Predicadores, curas, pastores y otras frutas

Luego de haberlo visto en El Utero de Marita y gracias a los links proveídos por Gregory House en su Sala de Autopsias, hoy me estoy bajando Preacher.

Preacher es un comic sobre un predicador que es poseído por Genesis, una criatura hija de un angel y un demonio, lo que la hace tan poderosa como dios mismo. Al notar esto, dios se escapa del cielo. Es así que Jessie Custer, el predicador, junto a una antigua novia y a un vampiro, se va a Texas a buscar a Dios para reclamarle la irresponsabilidad de escaparse del cielo por miedo a Genesis.

No soy de leer comics, y si decidí leer este no es tanto por el tema religioso, sino por verlo recomendado en tantos sitios. Además. Se dice que si Tarantino hiciera comics, habría escrito este.

De todos los comentarios que leí, uno me llamó bastante la atención: decía que este predicador “tenía un sentido de lo correcto e incorrecto muy claro, lo que lo hacía uno de los personajes más morales de los comics.”

Eso es exactamente lo que la gente espera de sus pastores, predicadores y sacerdotes: que sean “pilares morales” de la sociedad, que tengan una respuesta para cada problema, que sean amorosos, comprensivos, misericordiosos, amigables y sobre todo “representantes de dios en la Tierra”

Bueno, no siempre es así. Mientras que existen algunos pastores que llenan las expectativas de sus fieles, hay otros que son tan celosos, misóginos, megalómanos, caprichosos y arrogantes como su dios suele serlo en varios pasajes de la biblia.

Un pastor, un sacerdote o un predicador, solo por ser tal cosa, no son mejores que un abogado o un político. Aun así la gente confía en ellos, muchas veces ciegamente, y tiende a pensar en estos como guías o “pastores del rebaño.”

Hombre acusa a sacerdote de Missouri de abuso

Ok, es solo una acusación, nada final. Pero esperen…

Mark McAllister dice que fue abusado por el padre Gerald James Howard cuando tenía 13 años.
Cuando Howard vino a Missouri, ya había sido condenado por abuso sexual infantil en New Jersey.

O sea, este tipo ya había sido condenado por abusar sexualmente de un niño. Se debió esperar algo de decencia por parte de la iglesia católica y al menos mencionar que este tipo era peligroso? Por supuesto que no. La iglesia católica es tan orgullosa por ser santa y fundada por el mismísimo Jesucristo que muy difícilmente admitirá que hay algo malo con sus sacerdotes.

David Pierce, el antiguo ministro de la Benton’s First Baptist Church confesó y fue condenado por cuatro cargos de indecencia sexual con un menor ante el juez Grisham Philips del circuito del condado Saline esta mañana.

Luego de que Pierce introdujese a los niños al “charting”, normalmente hacía que los niños se masturbasen frente a él, dice el expediente. También señala que a veces también “se descubriría frente a los niños y se masturbaría.”

Nótese que hasta ahora las víctimas han sido niños. Y aun así las iglesias cristianas tienen la conciencia para condenar la homosexualidad en diferentes niveles. Qué pasó con “no mires la paja en el ojo ajeno?”

Charles Carfrey, 59, pastor de The Lord's House Church (Iglesia de la Casa del Señor) en Buckeye, recibirá hasta 4 años de prisión y un periodo probatorio de por vida cuando sea sentenciado el 11 de septiembre.

El 10 de agosto se declaró culpable de dos cargos de conducta sexual con un menor y un cargo de fallar al registrarse como ofensor sexual, muestran los records de la Corte Superior del condado de Maricopa

¿La casa del Señor? ¿Sabe el Señor lo que sucede ahí? Debería saber, para algo es Dios, ¿no?

Pero hay más. La madre de una de las víctimas dijo:

“Soy cristiana y odio a ese hombre. Y sé que no debería odiarlo, y lo hago por lo que le ha hecho a mi familia” dijo. “Como puede alguien hacer eso en el nombre de Dios? Eso es exactamente lo que aleja a la gente de Dios. No es Dios, es la gente. Es la gente.”

Exacto querida, es la gente. Porque no hay ningún dios que se preocupe por el sufrimiento tuyo o de tus hijas, solo gente que usa su nombre para hablar disparates con el objetivo de ganar poder, y gente como tú, creyéndose tales disparates.

Un antiguo pastor del condado de Delaware acusado de abusar de una niña de 15 años lo hizo encima de su escritorio en la iglesia, de acuerdo al reporte del arresto.

El contacto sexual ocurría “cada domingo” que la víctima iba a la iglesia, ya sea sobre el escritorio o el sofá de la oficina de la iglesia de Spires, al menos una hora antes que los servicios comenzaran. Durante algunos de los contactos sexuales, el padre de la víctima estaba ayudando a preparar los servicios.

¿Encima del escritorio? ¿Y por qué no encima del altar? ¿O habría sido mucha falta de respeto contra Dios? ¿Acaso no lo es el tener sexo con una chica de 15 años, estando casado y aun así decirle que la ama?


Estos son solo algunos de los casos ocurridos durante la última semana. Seguramente habrá más de estos maravillosos predicadores que nos muestran lo que una persona que ha ofrecido su vida a Dios es capaz de hacer. Mientras tanto, estaré leyendo Preacher, mientras pienso en lo que es considerado un buen predicador y cuan distinto es eso de ser una buena persona.

Preachers, preachers...

After having read about it in El Utero de Marita (Peru’s most influential blog) and thanks to the links provided by Gregory House in his “Sala de Autopsias”, today I’m downloading Preacher.

Preacher is a comic about a preacher (duh!) who is possessed by Genesis, the offspring of a devil and an angel, and because of that is as powerful as God. Seeing that power, God escapes from heaven. So, Jessie Custer, the preacher, along with his old girlfriend and a vampire, go to Texas looking for God to ask him why he was so irresponsible to leave heaven.

I’m not a comics’ person, and if I decided to give this one a chance is not just because of the religious theme, but because I saw it recommended in many places. Besides, it’s said that if Tarantino wrote comics, he had written this one.

Among all of the reviews I read about it, one thing draw my attention: One of them said that this preacher “had a very clear and strong view of right and wrong, which made him one of the most moral characters in the comics universe.”

That’s exactly what people expect from their preachers, pastors and priests: to be “moral pillars” of society, to have the answer for any problem, and to be loving, understanding, forgiving, friendly, and over all, “representatives of God on Earth”.

Well, that’s not always the case. While there are some preachers that happen to live up to what people expect from them, there are others who are just as jealous, misogynistic, megalomaniacal, capricious and arrogant as their god seems to be in many passages from the bible.

A preacher, a priest or a pastor, just for the sake of being it, is no better than a lawyer or a politician. Yet people trust them, usually blindly, and tend to think they are guides or “shepherds”.

Man Accuses Missouri Priest of Abuse

Ok, it’s just an accusation. Nothing final yet. Oh, wait…

Mark McAllister says he was abused by Fr. Gerald James Howard when he was 13.
When Howard came to Missouri he already had a criminal conviction for molesting children in New Jersey.

So, this guy had already been convicted for molesting children. Should a little decency have been expected from the church at least mentioning that this guy was dangerous? Of course not. The catholic church is so is so full of itself being holy and founded by Jesus that it will almost never admit that there is something wrong with its priests.

David Pierce, the former music minister of Benton’s First Baptist Church, confessed to and was convicted of four counts of sexual indecency with a child before Saline County Circuit Judge Grisham Philips this morning.
According to the negotiated plea, Pierce, 56, will serve 10 years in the Arkansas Department of Correction.

After Pierce introduced the boys to charting, which reportedly was done on a legal pad, he would commonly have the boys masturbate in front of him, the case file notes. It also notes that often he would “then expose himself to the boys and masturbate.”

It’s hard to believe that people trust this kind of “authorities” with their children. But, well, those are usually the people who believe the Earth is 6000 years old.

"I'm a Christian and I hate that man. And I know I'm not supposed to hate that man and I do because I see what he's done to my family," she said. "How could somebody do that in the name of God? That's exactly what turns people against God. It's not God; it's people. It's people."

Yes, dear, it’s people. Because there is no god that cares for your or your daughters’ suffering, only people using that name to talk nonsense to gain power, and people like you believing all the nonsense.

A former Delaware County pastor accused of molesting a 15-year-old girl assaulted her on top of the desk in his church office, according to an arrest affidavit.

The sexual contact assaults occurred "every Sunday" the victim was at church on either the desk or couch in Spires' church office about an hour before services began. During some of the assaults, the victim's father was helping prepare for services.

On the desk? Couldn’t it have been on the altar? Or would that have been too much irreverence against God? Then, what is having sex with a 15 year-old girl while married and still telling her “I love you”?



These are just some cases retrieved during last week. Surely, next will have more of these wonderful preachers who show us what a person who has devoted his life to God can do. Meanwhile I’ll be reading “Preacher” while thinking what is considered a good preacher and how different that is from being a good person.

Uruguay, muy cerca de aprobar ley que permitiría a parejas del mismo sexo adoptar niños

Por lo general no se oye mucho sobre Uruguay, y cuando oigo mencionar el nombre de ese país, lo primero que se me viene a la cabeza es la actriz y cantante Natalia Oreiro. En otras palabras, Uruguay es un país que no parece recibir tanta atención como el resto del “barrio”, como Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia, Chile, etc. Pero hoy me encuentro con que hay buenas noticias provenientes de ese pequeños país.

Uruguay aprueba proyecto que permite adoptar niños a homosexuales
La iniciativa obtuvo luz verde en la Cámara de Diputados y ahora deberá pasar al Senado, donde se espera obtenga una rápida aprobación. De ser así, sería el primer país de América Latina en permitir la adopción en parejas del mismo sexo.

Muchas veces pienso en Latinoamérica como si esta fuese una barriada en la cual los vecino se insultan y se pelean. Pero es agradable el ver como en esa barriada hay un vecino inteligente, amable y tolerante que hace la diferencia y da una esperanza para el futuro.

Por otro lado, tal como muchos comentarios lo indican, hay muchos que no están felices con esto. Apuesto mi brazo derecho a que la iglesia católica no está feliz con la decisión. (Acabo de revisar y, sí, tenía razón). Eso es bueno. Cuando se trata de homosexuales, la iglesia católica usualmente se comporta como si no hubiese cambiado en 1500 años, aun llena de odio y superstición. Es agradable el ver que algunos congresistas uruguayos son distintos:

“Lo que importa es el amor o la calidad con la que se constituye el hogar para que el niño se pueda integrar y no la opción sexual de sus padres”, dijo el diputado oficialista Pablo Alvarez a la radio El Espectador.

Y tiene razón. De acuerdo a la American Psychological Association:

1. Los niños de padres gays o lesbianas tienen más problemas con su identidad sexual que los niños de padres heterosexuales? Por ejemplo, si estos niños desarrollan problemas de identidad de género y/o comportamiento en el rol de los géneros? La respuesta de la investigación es clara: Las identidades de género y sexuales (incluyendo identidad de género, comportamiento de género y roles y orientación sexual) se desarrollan en prácticamente la misma forma entre niños de madres lesbianas, así como en niños de padres heterosexuales. Aun hay pocos estudios en cuanto a los niños de padres gays.

Por supuesto, no todo el mundo está de acuerdo:

“Todos los niños tienen el derecho de ser adoptados por padre y madre y deben tener, desde nuestro punto de vista, una referencia nítida de padre y madre”, dijo el diputado Pablo Abdala, del Partido Nacional, de centroderecha, a la emisora.

Bueno, su punto de vista está errado. Solo porque es algo que ha venido pasado por siglos no significa que sea correcto.

Uruguay very near of approving a law that would allow same-sex couples to adopt children

I don’t hear much mention about Uruguay, and when thinking about that country, I usually think of actress and singer Natalia Oreiro. In other words, Uruguay is a country that doesn’t seem to receive a lot of attention, at least not like the rest of the “barrio”, like Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Chile, etc. But today there are good news coming from that small country.

Uruguay approves a law project that would allow homosexual couples to adopt children.

The initiative got green light in the House of Representatives and now will go to the Senate, where a quick acceptance is expected. If that happens, it would be the first Latinamerican country that allows adoption by same-sex couples

So many times I think of Latinoamerica as a ghetto neighborhood in which neighbors are often yelling and fighting with each other. But it’s nice to see that in that ghetto, there is an intelligent, loving and tolerant neighbor that makes a difference and gives us hope for a better future.

On the other hand, just like many comments in the page suggest, there are many who are not going to be happy with that. I bet my arm that the Catholic Church is not happy with this decision either (I just checked and I was right). That’s good. When it comes to gay people, the catholic church usually behaves as if it hasn’t changed in 1500 years, still full of hatred and superstition. It’s nice to see how some of the Uruguayan congressmen are different:

“What is important is love and the quality with which a home is built for the kid, and not the sexual option of his or her parents”, said Pablo Alvarez, congressmen for the party that is now in power to El Espectador radio.

He is right. According to the American Psychological Association:

1. Do children of lesbian and gay parents have more problems with sexual identity than do children of heterosexual parents? For instance, do these children develop problems in gender identity and/or in gender role behavior? The answer from research is clear: sexual and gender identities (including gender identity, gender-role behavior, and sexual orientation) develop in much the same way among children of lesbian mothers as they do among children of heterosexual parents. Few studies are available regarding children of gay fathers.

Of course, not everyone agrees:

“All children have a right to be adopted by a father and a mother and should have, from our point of view, a clear reference of father and mother’, said congressmen Pablo Abdala, from the opposition party”

Well, his point of view is wrong. Just because it has been happening for centuries doesn’t mean it’s right.

I’m glad for Uruguay.

Kentucky despide a su guardaespaldas imaginario

Es a veces gracioso el ver como una ley inconstitucional (y muchas veces, ridícula) es introducida en la legislatura en plena cara del gobierno. Pero siempre es agradable el ver como a este tipo de leyes se les jala la palanca

Ese es el caso de Kentucky. En el 2006 una ley que requería que la Oficina de Seguridad Nacional de Kentucky enfatizara…

“la dependencia de un Dios Todopoderoso como un ser vital para la seguridad del estado” fue introducida por el representante Tom Riner (D)

Aguanta… un demócrata? Introduciendo leyes con disparates que generalmente se ven en los republicanos? En qué pensaba este señor?

Un ministro bautista del sur

Ah, no importa.

Afortunadamente esta locura terminó cuando el juez Thomas Wingate declaró que la ley violaba la primera enmienda de la constitución de los Estados Unidos, la cual prohíbe que el estado establezca una religión. Bien por ese juez. Aunque en realidad es un tanto triste el tener que alegrarse al ver que un juez esté haciendo su trabajo al eliminar una ley que viola tan flagrantemente la primera enmienda de la constitución:

El Congreso no hará ley alguna con respecto a la adopción de una religión o prohibiendo el libre ejercicio de dichas actividades; o que coarte la libertad de expresión o de la prensa, o el derecho del pueblo para reunirse pacíficamente, y para solicitar al gobierno la reparación de agravios.

En pocas palabras, el gobierno se mezcla con la religión. La gente puede creer lo que le dé la gana, pero el gobierno no puede apoyar tales creencias. Lo cual es una excelente idea, pues hace al gobierno igual para todos y no pone a ninguna creencia en un lugar privilegiado sobre otra. Todas merecen el mismo tratamiento, desde Jehová hasta el Monstruo de Spaghetti Volador.
