El 25 de diciembre es asociado con el nacimiento de varios dioses paganos, incluyendo a MIthra, Horus, Hercules, Zeus y Sol Invictus. El festival romano de Saturnalia también termina por estos día. El cirstianismo importó muchos de estos mitos y tradiciones paganos en sus propias costumbres alrededor del año 400 AD.
Hoy en día los cristianos se molestan cuando la navidad pierde sus raíces cristianas. Esto es irónico, pues el cristianismo se robó el día festivo en primer lugar para facilitar el obterner seguidores.
Sin embargo, es una excelente oportunidad para compartir nuestro amor con los amigos y la familia, actuar con buena voluntad, hacia aquellos que han tenido peor suerte que uno. Es un tiempo para que los niños revelen su inocencia y se maravillen ante el mundo, y para que los adultos dejen salir su niño interior.

Believers' capacity to deny reality never ceases to amaze me. It's not even as if we didn't know about these facts, but that they don't like the facts just because they belittle their petty God. En los Estados Unidos se ha esparcido la idea de que existe una "Guerra en contra de la Navidad" iniciada por los ateos (y en general por gente que prefiere ver un gobierno secular donde cada persona tenga los mismos derechos). Como es natural, esta idea es esparcida por la derecha religiosa, que son casi siempre cristianos conservadores.
A veces estas quejas se manifiestan cuando se hacen berrinches debido a carteles ateos
"Esta es la época del año en que los laicos, estos ateos, eligen para para atacar nuestro Cristianismo y nuestra religión." dice Jeff Field, de la Liga Católica. "Hemos decidido que no nos vamos a quedar sentados y dejar que eso pase." Esta vez no habrá otra mejilla.
Yo no creo que nadie se trague los mitos de Rómulo y Remo, o Zeus y Hércules porque, bueno, son eso, mitos. Sin embargo, hay muchos que se amargan al ver que alguien racional señala al cristianismo y lo llama también un mito. No porque mucha gente crea que es real lo convierte en algo real.
Ah, y los ateos hemos estado atacando la insensatez religiosa por años, de lo contrario, no tendríamos sociedades seculares en donde se trabaje para llegar a que los derechos humanos de todos sean respetados.
Algunas otras veces los cristianos se quejarán sobre la secularización de la navidad, diciendo que no se debe decir "Felices Fiestas", sino "Feliz Navidad", o se quejarán de que se prohíban escenas de la natividad en espacios públicos. Incluso hacen películas sobre esto:
A los cristianos conservadores les gusta ufanarse de la constitución de los Estados Unidos, pero tienden a olvidarse de la Primera Enmienda de la Constitución, la cual declara que el gobierno no puede favorecer a una religión sobre otra, ni tampoco a la pertenencia a una religión sobre la falta de creencia y viceversa. En otras palabras, no puede usar nuestro dinero para hacer escenas religiosas de ningún tipo.
Personalmente no tengo problemas con la Navidad o con desearlo a alguien una "Feliz Navidad". Ni siquiera Richard Dawkins tiene problemas con ello. Pero aun así podría animalrme a decir felices fiestas, solo para ver las reacciones.
Por supuesto, esto no le sienta bien a muchos, quienes desena ver sola y únicamenta a *su* celebración representada, por lo que detestan al "Felices Fiestas", que reúne a todo lo que se pueda celebrar en estos días.
Finalmente, si de verdad quieren una "Guerra contra la Navidad" tal vez prefieran que los ateos nos comportemos de esta forma:
El 18 de diciembre, un grupo de fundamentalistas hindúes golpearon a dos docenas de personas que cantaban villancicos, inlcuyendo a una joven mujer, y los llevaron a la estación de policía del suburbio de Mumbai, alegando que el cantar canciones de navidad insulta a los hindúes.
Dos días atrás, el padre Thomas Chirattavayalil, quien dirige una misión en una villa remota en la parte de central de Madhya Pradesh, fue atacado a la medianoche por un grupo de enmascarados que lo dejaron seriamente herido. El 12 de diciembre estatuas de la Virgen María, San Juan y Santa María Magdalena fueron encontradas decapitadas y desfiguradas en una iglesia del estado de Andra Pradesh.
Eso sí puede llamarse una guerra en contra de la navidad. Los ateos estadounidenses no han hecho nada excepto ejercer su derecho a la libre expresión y hacer valer sus derechos constitucionales. ¿Por qué? porque es el paso necesario para una sociedad en donde la igualdad prime para todos.

As usual, this idea is proposed by the whiny religious right (mainly conservative Christians).
"This is the time of year that the secularists, these atheists, choose to assault our Christianity and our religion," says Jeff Field with the Catholic League. "We decided that we're not going to sit by and let that happen." No turning the other cheek this time.
I don't think anyone believes the myths of Romus and Remulus, or Zeus and Hercules becase, well, those are myths. Yet, many get angry at rational people pointing out that this is also a myth. Just because many people like to believe it's real doesn't change that.
Oh, and atheists have been challenging religious nonsense for years. Where do you think a society that respects human rights comes from?
Some other times, Christians will whine at the secularization of Christmas, represented in "Season's Greetings" instead of "Merry Christmas", or in the driving away of nativity scenes in public places. They would even make a movie about it:
Conservative Christians like to brag an boast about the constitution, but then tend to forget the establishment clause, which declares that the government can't favor one religion over another, or religion over lack of religion and viceversa. In other words, it can't use our money to put up displays about one religion.
Personally, I have no problem with Christmas and wishing someone else a merry one. Even Richard Dawkins hasn't one. But I'll still might say "Happy Holidays" just for the fun of it.
Of course this won't sit well with many of those want just and only their celebration around, which is why they despise the "Happy Holidays" (which includes everything that is celebrated this season) and prefer "Merry Christmas", which is only one of those celebrations.
Finally, if you want a real "War on Christmas" you might prefer atheists to do something like this:

Well, that's a war con Christmas. The American atheists haven't done anything except exercise their right to free speech and demanded that the constitution be respected in regard of civil liberties. Why? Because that's the logical thing to do if we want a world in which equality is valued.

Más aun, la violencia es inspirada en la dizque "religión de paz". Los musulmanes moderados te dirásn que la "violencia está condenada en el Koran", por lo que estos no son musulmanes reales. Bueno, pues las mismas acusaciones pueden ser hechas por los más radicales, diciendo que los moderados no son verdaderos musulmanes al no obedecer al pie de la letra las escrituras. Así que olvidémonos de la corrección política por un rato y veamos al Islam como lo que es, una religión insensata que demanda fanatismo aunque este llegue a la violencia.

The brother of a Harry Potter films actress who assaulted her because her boyfriend was not Muslim has been warned he could be jailed.
Ashraf Azad, 28, was due to face trial at Manchester Crown Court for attacking his sister Afshan Azad, 22, who played Padma Patil in the hit films.
The court was told Miss Azad was assaulted and branded a "prostitute" after meeting a young Hindu man, a relationship which brought anger from her father and brother.
There might be some anger when a child starts dating someone of different faith or economic status, yes, everywhere. But to beat up the "disobedient" child? That takes that anger to a whole new level, to the animal level to be exact.
Moreover, this violence is inspired in the so-called "religion of peace". Moderate Muslims will tell you that "violence is condemned in the Koran", therefore, these are not real Muslims. Well, the same accusations can be made by those who use violence, even the taliban, that the "moderates" are not real muslims. So get your story right, forget about political correctness and look at Islam for what it is, a violent non-sensical zealotry-inspiring religion.
Se puede decir que hoy celebramos "Kitzmas", pues fue hace 5 años que el caso de Kitzmiller v. Dover en Pensilvania llegó a la conclusión de que el "diseño inteligente" es simple creacionismo y no merece un lugar en el salón de clase De acuerdo al Consejo Nacional para la Educación de la Ciencia (NCSE por sus siglas en inglés):
Como un primer caso para poner a prueba las política de un districo escolar requiriendo la enseñanza del "diseño inteligente", el juicio atrajo atención nacional e internacional. Ambas partes del caso presentaron testimonios de expertos durante 6 semanas (desde el 26 de septiembre hasta el 4 de Noviembre del 2005). El 20 de diciembre, el juez John E. Jones llegó a una conclusión con palabras que no dejaban lugar a duda, que el diseño inteligente era, como decía el fiscal, una forma de creacionismo
La historia empieza cuando un par de tipos no muy iluminados llegaron al concejo educativo de Dover, en Pennsylvania. William ("Bill") Buckinghamy Alan Bonsell empezaron a poner objeciones al libro de biología vigente, el cual obviamente, hablaba sobre evolución. Estos consiguieron que el siguiente texto se incluyera en el currículo:
Los estudiantes oirán los problemas y fallas de la teoría de Darwin y de otras teorías evolutivas, incluyendo, pero sin limitarse a, el diseño inteligente. NOta: Los orígenes de la vida no son enseñados.
Para alguien sin mucha educación, esto puede sonar bonito y hasta justo. Pero para alguien informado, es como poner a la astrología en el mismo puesto que la astronomía. Se está poniendo una idea estúpida, como el creacionismo, al mismo nivel de la evolución, como si fuesen iguales.
Además, se les pidió a los profesores que leyeran esto antes de la clase:
Debido a que la teoría de Darwin es una teoría, esta aun está siendo probada a medida que nueva evidencia se descubre. La teoría no es un hecho. Hay vacíos en la teoría, que existen debido a que no hay evidencia. Una teoría se define como una explicación probada que unifica un amplio rango de observaciones.
Además, recomendaron un libro con un título bonito, "Of Pandas and People" (Sobre Pandas y y Humanos), el cual era simple propaganda para el creacionismo. Tenía que ser sobre pandas, pues, no estaba dirigido a un grupo que de verdad busque conocimiento, sino uno que le gusta sentirse bien sin importar cual sea la realidad.
¿Y a quién no le gustan los pandas? Olvídense del lobo vestido de oveja, mejor usen pandas
Si bien el diseño inteligente no estaba siendo enseñado, este se presentaba como una alternativa a la evolución. La gente que escribió esto no tiene idea de lo que una teoría signifca en el contexto científico que es usado para describir a la evolución. Si se está tratando de probar la evolución de la misma forma en que se prueba una fórmula matemática, no se va a poder. Al igual que muchas otras cosas que llevan el nombre de teoría, pero que cualquiera con dos dedos de frente reconoce como hechos. Una teoría es, según The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language:
Unconjuntode enunciadosoprincipios establecidos paraexplicarunconjunto dehechoso fenómenos, especialmenteuno queha sido repetidamenteprobadooesampliamenteaceptaday puede ser utilizadopara hacer prediccionesacerca delos fenómenosnaturales.
Bastante distinto de lo que los creacionistas piensan, que es algo así como una hipótesis.
En fin, esto no le hizo mucha gracia a algunos padres y profesores, por lo que empezaron un juicio en contra de esta decisión. El juicio empezó el 26 de septiembre del 2005, donde ambas partes presentaron evidencia de su postura (en realidad solo una parte presentó evidencia que vale la pena), y el 20 de diciembre, el juez llegó a una decisió que incluía lo siguiente:
Un aspecto importante del Movimiento del Diseño Inteligente es que a pesar de las alegaciones de los acusados de lo contrario, se describe al Diseño Inteligente como un argumento religioso. En ese sentido, los escritos de los proponentes del DI revelan que el diseñador que proponen en su argumento es el Dios del Cristianismo. (page 26)
La evidencia presentada en el jucio demuestra que el Diseño Inteligente es nada menos que otro nombre del creacinismo (page 31)
La arroladora evidencia presentada en este juicio establece que el Diseño Inteligente es un simple cambio de nombre del creacionismo y no una teoría científica. (page 43)
Y como deben saber, la religión no tiene lugar en los salones de clase.
A veces me pregunto qué hace que la gente elija la ignorancia en lugar del conocimiento. Me parece que esta ignorancia los hace sentirse tan felices, tan amados, y tan invulnerables que están dispuestos a abandonar el sentido común y seguir lo que sea que los haga felices. Este es el tipo de personas que prefiere vivir en un mundo de fantasía y que se molestará cuando uno reconoce esa fantasía como tal.
El mundo funciona de la forma que funciona, nos guste o no. La evidencia indica que la evolución sucedió, nos guste o no. Y no hay evidencia de la existencia de un dios, nos guste o no. El pensar de forma distinta no es más qe perder contacto con la realidad y, hasta cierto punto, perder el respeto que merece una persona que basa su vida en los hecho y en la lógica en lugar de la mera fantasía.

The story starts when a couple of not very enlightened people made it to the Dover Board of Education (in Pennsylvania). William ("Bill") Buckingham and Alan Bonsell started to object the current biology book, which featured evolution.. These guys got to include this in the biology curriculum:
Students will be made aware of the gaps/problems in Darwin's theory and of other theories of evolution including, but not limited to, intelligent design. Note: Origins of life is not taught.
To the uneducated mind this might sound nice and even fair. But for the informed person, this is like equating astrology with astronomy. You put a retarded idea (creationism) at the same place with evolution, as if these were equal.
Also, teachers were required to read a statement containing this:
Because Darwin's Theory is a theory, it is still being tested as new evidence is discovered. The Theory is not a fact. Gaps in the Theory exist for which there is no evidence. A theory is defined as a well-tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations.
Also, they recommended a book with a cute title, "Of Pandas and People", which was just propaganda for creationism. They had to be pandas because, well, the book wasn't directed to people who actually seek knowledge, but those who like to feel good regardless how reality works
And really, who doesn't love a panda? Forget about wolves in sheep clothes. Use pandas
While intelligent design was not being taught, it was being presented as an alternative to evolution. The people who penned this had no idea of the definition of theory in a scientific context as the one used to describe the theory of evolution. If you're trying to prove evolution in the same way you can prove that you prove a math theorem, you won't be able to do so. Just like with most things around the world. As said by The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language:
A set of statements or principles devised to explain a group of facts or phenomena, especially one that has been repeatedly tested or is widely accepted and can be used to make predictions about natural phenomena.
So, it's very different from the idea creationists have of it, which is of a hunch or a hypothesis.
Anyway, this didn't sit well with some teachers and parents, who filed a lawsuit against the ruling. After a trial that started on September 26 where evidence from both sides (actually only one side presented creditable evidence), on December 20, 2005 the judge reached a decision, which included:
A significant aspect of the IDM [intelligent design movement] is that despite Defendants' protestations to the contrary, it describes ID as a religious argument. In that vein, the writings of leading ID proponents reveal that the designer postulated by their argument is the God of Christianity. (page 26)
The evidence at trial demonstrates that ID is nothing less than the progeny of creationism. (page 31)
The overwhelming evidence at trial established that ID is a religious view, a mere re-labeling of creationism, and not a scientific theory. (page 43)
And as you know, religion has no place in a science classroom.
Sometimes I still wonder what makes people choose ignorance instead of knowledge. It seems to me that this ignorance makes them feel so happy, so loved, so less vulnerable that they are willing to shut some common sense down, and follow whatever they feel makes them happy. This is the kind of people who prefer to live in a fantasy world and will get angry at those who point out it is such.
The world works the way it works, whether we like it or not. The evidence points out to evolution as a fact, whether we like it or not. And there is no evidence for a god, whether we like it or not. To think otherwise is to lose contact with reality and, to a certain point, lose some respect one would have if one's opinions were based on logic and facts instead of mere fantasy.
